Desperate Mothers Want Their Missing Children Back Home

KUALA LUMPUR: The disappearance of three people have left their mothers at their wits end. Housewife Ng Kim Hong, 38, said her 17-year-old daughter Siew Kai Leng went missing after going out with a friend named Ah Hong on Aug 31, 2017. "Ah Hong promised to bring my daughter home at 10.30pm, but she never came back. He later claimed that my daughter was taken away by another man after having dinner in Kepong," she said at a press conference organised by MCA public services and complaints department chief Datuk Seri Michael Chong. "We have put my daughter's photo and information on Facebook and asked people to look for her. But after more than a year, we still cannot find her," the mother of five from Rawang said. However, she claimed the police report shown by Ah Hong did not in...

The World’s Most Powerful Women in 2018

Did you feel the world move? Power shifted across the globe this year as women cracked new ceilings and tumbled from positions of power. We’ve seen a new class of disruptive leaders breaking through to join the list. But we also see a number of women at the top whose power is being challenged or who are stepping down. The middle is where it gets interesting. Women are making strides and charting the course to break out and storm the corner office, or their own office, in greater ranks. At no time has more light been shone on women leaders and the need for more diversity. From #MeToo to #TimesUp to 'We Too', a term most recently used to describe the rise of women’s voices in the United Nations this year, women are mobilizing for change. The women on Forbes 15th annual Most Powerful Women...

Australian Watchdog Wants A Regulator For Dominant Google, Facebook

Australia's competition watchdog on Monday recommended tougher scrutiny and a new regulatory body to check the dominance of tech giants Facebook Inc and Alphabet Inc's Google in the country's online advertising and news markets. The recommendation, in a preliminary report on the U.S. firms' market power, is being closely watched around the world as lawmakers wrestle with the powerful tech firms' large and growing influence in public life, from privacy to publishing. It comes days after Australia passed laws forcing tech companies to help police access private user data, and amid growing concern from authorities worldwide about the giants' commercial behaviour and distribution of so-called "fake news". "When you get to a certain stage and you get market power, which both Google and...

How Japan’s Corporate Culture Allows Corrupt CEOS To Win

After his arrest, Nissan removed Carlos Ghosn as chairman due to his suspected acts of financial  just the latest in a long line of mishaps to rock the Japanese corporate world. Other manufacturers, such as Kobe Steel, Takeda and Toray Industries, have shocked the public in recent years, admitting to violating safety rules or falsifying data. But the scandals are not only a shock to Japanese consumers — they leave a mark on Japan`s reputation as a reliable and quality-oriented manufacturer and business partner. Japanese corporate structures offer some explanations for the events. In most Western companies, employees are hired with a detailed work contract, and only do what's agreed on in the contract. In Japan, employees are hired with no job description, and can be assigned any task...

Why You Need To Start Tracking Your Time Every Day

Time tracking is a controversial topic. It evokes images of teams clocking in and out of a factory floor or being tethered to their desks for 60 hours a week. Of course, those scenarios are awful. I don't want to dismiss the very real ways that time tracking can become a horrible way to run a team, but I do want to tell you why I believe it should be used--and how. Before we get into the rationale, I want you to question your assumption that time tracking makes you a control freak or a micromanager. For a brief moment, let's imagine together an alternative way of looking at this, in which you have time tracking set up not because you don't value your team's time (and their ability to finish their days on time and have a life afterward), but because you do. Time tracking is the path t...

Football: Malaysia And Vietnam Ready For Fitting Suzuki Cup Finale

Those Vietnam fans who think that the comfortable 2-0 win over Malaysia in the group stage of the 2018 AFF Cup means that the two-legged final against the same opposition will yield a similar result should be careful. Malaysia lost the opening game of the 2010 tournament 5-1 to Indonesia yet beat the same opposition 4-2 on aggregate to lift the trophy for the first, and to date only, time. There are always warnings to be found in history. This week, with the first leg in Kuala Lumpur on Tuesday and the second in Hanoi on Saturday, is about history. It is about the chance for two passionate football nations to rule Southeast Asia for a second time and for two sets of players to put themselves into the history books. The two coaches certainly can. Vietnam coach Park Hang-seo can ...

Next Bantuan Sara Hidup Payment To Be Made After CNY, Says Finance Minister

The next Bantuan Sara Hidup (BSH) payment will be made after the 2019 Chinese New Year celebrations, says Finance Minister Lim Guan Eng. Chinese New Year will fall on Feb 5 and 6 next year. "Now there is a new approach and that is why we need some time to collect and compile information. "As announced in Budget 2019, we are using new methods to collect information but that requires effort, so we need some time. Lim was speaking to reporters when met at the Parliament lobby on Monday (Dec 10). BR1M (1Malaysia People's Aid) was renamed to BSH after Pakatan Harapan took over Putrajaya. Lim, during the tabling of Budget 2019 in Nov 2, said that the government would maintain the cash aid to assist low-income groups.

Cendol Sparks Debate Across The Causeway

A recently released list of the world's best desserts has reignited the great food debate between foodies in Singapore and across the Causeway. This time, it is over chendol, an icy sweet dessert of pandan jelly, red beans and coconut milk, laced with palm sugar. CNN last Saturday (Dec 1) announced its latest list of 50 of the world's best desserts, which included chendol from Singapore alongside New York cheesecake, Hong Kong egg tarts and Thai mango sticky rice. In its description, CNN said that while versions of the "blissfully cool dessert" can be found across South-east Asia, Singapore's take on the treat, with sweetened red beans, is "especially tempting". CNN added that Singaporeans enjoy having the chilled dessert on sweltering afternoons and that it has become a favour...
