No Plans for MCO Despite 62% Surge in Weekly Covid-19 Cases

Addressing concerns surrounding the recent spike in Covid-19 infections, Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad confirmed that there are no immediate discussions regarding the implementation of a Movement Control Order (MCO).

In a live conference via Facebook during the Ministry of Health’s Covid-19 update, Dr Dzulkefly stressed the government’s focus on strategies to manage the escalating situation without resorting to a complete lockdown.

Acknowledging the notable 62.2% surge in new Covid-19 cases reported in the 50th epidemiological week of 2023, totaling 20,696 cases compared to the previous week, Dr Dzulkefly highlighted that health facilities have not been overwhelmed, allowing for effective management without stringent lockdown measures.

Despite the rise, the Health Minister emphasized that the outbreak is still under control. He urged the public to remain vigilant by adhering to preventive measures such as avoiding crowded places, confined spaces, and close conversations—commonly known as the “3Cs.”

Additionally, he encouraged the promotion of rigorous hand hygiene practices, advocated for booster vaccine doses among high-risk groups, and advised Covid-positive individuals to seek prompt medical attention.

This call for caution follows the recent recommendation by Health Director-General Datuk Dr Muhammad Radzi Abu Hassan, who urged the public to wear masks during social gatherings with friends and family.

The advice stemmed from a concerning surge in Covid-19 cases during the previous epidemiological week, ME49, which recorded 12,757 cases compared to 6,796 cases in ME48.

Dr Radzi highlighted the need for swift and prudent preventative actions, especially during holiday periods marked by increased travel and gatherings.

As the country grapples with the surge in cases, health authorities continue to stress the importance of vigilance and adherence to preventive measures to curb the spread of the virus.
