Median monthly salaries and wages up 7.7% in 2022

Credit: Malay Mail The Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM) reports that after Malaysia adopted the RM1,500 minimum wage in May of last year, median monthly incomes and wages increased 7.7 percent to RM2,424 in 2022 from RM2,250 in 2021. Chief statistician Datuk Seri Dr. Mohd Uzir Mahidin attributed the rise to ongoing economic and social activities, which were backed by rising tourist arrivals and improvements in the labor market, particularly in the services sector. “The Malaysian government had increased the minimum wage to RM1,500 starting from May 2022, mandating a monthly wage of RM1,500 for employees in all sectors, as a measure that is expected to improve overall salaries and wages conditions in the country as compared to the previous years. “Thus, this situation i...

Malaysia aims to gain knowledge from China’s development

Malaysia, which is benefiting from new chances for growth as a result of its participation in the Belt and Road Initiative, looks forward to learning more from China's achievements during the last decades, according to Johari bin Abdul, speaker of Malaysia's Dewan Rakyat, the lower house of parliament. For Malaysia, a country rich in rivers, the BRI acts as "another river" to enhance transportation and the local economy, according to Johari. He used the East Coast Rail Link, or ECRL, being built by China Communications Construction Company to make his point. The more than 600-kilometer railway, which runs along Peninsular Malaysia's east coast, is a flagship project of BRI collaboration. The railway is anticipated to connect Port Klang on the west coast with the states of ...

World’s largest flower risks extinction

Most species of the famously large Rafflesia flower, which has long captured the imagination with its enormous speckled red petals, are now at risk of extinction, new research warned last Wednesday. Rafflesia is actually a parasite and lives on tropical vines across parts of South-East Asia, producing blooms that are among the largest in the world. It is something of an enigma, with its flowers emerging unpredictably, and botanists have had limited success propagating it outside its natural environment. One species of the flower is currently classed as “critically endangered”, according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). To better understand the plant and its conservation status, an international group of botanists examined 42 known Rafflesia specie...

Singapore is the largest real estate investor in Japan in 2023

According to Knight Frank LLP, Singapore became the largest investor in Japan's real estate market this year, drawn in by the weak yen and rising demand in the logistics and hospitality sectors. In a report released this month, the city-state has brought in about US$3 billion (RM14 billion) so far in 2023, followed by investors from the US, Canada, and the United Arab Emirates. Christine Li, head of Asia-Pacific research at Knight Frank, said that the purchase of six warehouses in Japan by Singapore's sovereign wealth fund GIC Pte from Blackstone Inc. for US$800 million played a big role in that. GIC Chief Investment Officer Jeffrey Jaensubhakij recently labeled Japan as a "very cheap" market with significant upside potential. International investors are drawn to the country'...

Next month onwards, some Gardenia goods will be more expensive

Beginning on October 1, Gardenia, a significant bread producer, will increase the price of a few items, including its Twiggies. However, it stated that the costs of its Original Classic white bread, wholemeal bread, and Toast'em bread line will not change. “This is to ensure the price increase (on selected products) would not burden our customers,” Gardenia told FMT. A new price list for 30 of the company's products has been circulating on social media, and it has also been validated by the corporation. Gardenia raised the pricing of its loaves, spreads, and other goods in September of last year, claiming the effect of inflation on raw materials. The planned price rise, which will be applied nationwide, will be the third since December 1, 2021. Gardenia Fluffy Buns 2...
