AFL-CIO Made History: Diversity in Their New Leadership

On August 20th 2021, Executive Council of American Federation of Labor and Congress of Industrial Organizations (AFL-CIO) announced the appointment of their new president, Liz Shuler. Shuler worked as the assistant to the international president since 2009. She was elected due to the sudden passing of her predecessor, Richard Trumka. With her being elected as the top ruler, Schuler determined to continue the support of legislation of late Trumka.

Fred Redmond was elected as the secretary-treasurer of the AFL-CIO. Previously, he was the international vice president for the United Steelworkers. Tefere Gebre, the first person who is a people of colour and immigrant to hold the position and continue as the executive vice president of the organization. The appointment of both Shuler and Redmond have made history with the diversity of the leaders of the labor movement organization.
